THE TIMES GARDEN

Hangzhou

The design concept originates from the visiting experience of the oriental gardens. When visiting, the outdoor and the indoor blends with each other as you walk through back and forth, causing sensory changes constantly, whether it’s the purposely narrowed and elongated corridor, or the suddenly enlightened square pavilion. The water court being outside of the square pavilion, reveals the landscape implication of the Chinese miniature universe. The closed and open spacial rhythm, as well as the purposely narrowed and furthered sight line, are the quintessences of the Chinese garden. The design is to take the visiting experience as a clue, organizing three boxes in series with long corridors, surrounded by the central water court, so that the spacial rhythm is flexible. It also skillfully combines the western modern architectural language with the Oriental garden experience. The semi-transparent "Cloud Mountain" installation art in the box is extracted from the “Cloud Mountain” image of classical ink and presented with contemporary washing techniques. The refraction of sunlight at different times makes it light and ethereal. Another box, where one side is completely open to the water court, creates a gray space between the indoor and the outdoor. The flowing water sculpture penetrates to the outside, as the water dripping down to the dark trough into the water court, breaking the boundaries between the indoor and the outdoor. Two mountain-shaped sofas stand on both sides of the meeting area, as if they are looking over at each other, just like in the traditional ink paintings.
