How can an office reflect a company’s global attributes while honoring local context and culture? How can a brand feel consistent across international locations? These are the questions that Rapt Studio set out to answer with each new office for Unity Technologies. Unity has emerged as the world’s most widely used real-time 3D development platform. Through their ongoing collaborative partnership with Rapt they’ve established a number of new international offices to support their product’s global growth. With each new location, Rapt aims to support Unity employees in their mission to build technology for the next generation while taking into consideration the specific needs of each place. Just as Unity develops tools for users to construct virtual worlds, Rapt has constructed the physical spaces in which employees can do their best work. Incorporating subtle details that spark imaginative thinking, Rapt has embraced the art of surprise. The new offices are immersive and experiential, playing with perspective and point of view. In Copenhagen, where Unity was founded in 2004, Rapt renovated a three-story building in the heart of the city center. Honoring the original structure’s history, Rapt incorporated modern yet warm design features through the lens of Scandinavian aesthetic sensibilities. Staying true to a commitment to Nordic design, Rapt selected local lighting and furniture while incorporating unexpected elements: a cantilevered reception desk that balances precariously upon entry, wood-slat cladding that runs askew of vertical, and contorted window portals that frame rooflines while bringing the top floor to life. The alterations complement the existing building’s character.
