Visitor Guide

Visitor Tip

The View from the Shard (floors 68-72) is the best panorama in London. Go at sunset for the best light. Level 72 is partially open-air.

Best Photo Spot

From Tower Bridge with the Shard framed against the sky. From Millennium Bridge for the full South Bank context. At night, the tip illuminates — photograph from the North Bank.

Access & Hours

The View from the Shard observation deck: book online, timed tickets. Hotels and restaurants inside also have views. The base has a public plaza.

Insider Note

Piano deliberately left the top unfinished — the glass shards are open to the sky, creating what he calls a "spire of ice." The building uses eight angled glass planes that never meet at the top. London's planning was forever changed by the public debate this tower generated.

Design & Structure

Parametric Surface
Computational Process

Piano's concept was literally a shard of glass — a tapered pyramidal form created by eight angled planes. The glass angles were computationally optimized to reduce solar gain while maximizing daylight. The spire's open top was a deliberate design decision, not a cost cut.

Materiality

Extra-white low-iron glass (11,000 panels), steel frame, reinforced concrete core. The glass was specially developed for the project — clearer than standard architectural glass to achieve the crystalline effect.
