A dome of light floating over water — Nouvel's meditation on the desert sky

Visitor Guide
Go in the morning when "rain of light" creates its best effect — thousands of star-shaped perforations in the dome project shifting light patterns onto the water below. The effect was computationally designed to mimic light filtering through layered palm fronds.
From the water approach looking back at the dome. Inside, stand at the edge of the water channel beneath the dome for the light-play effect.
Open daily except Monday. Book online. Water taxi from Abu Dhabi is the most dramatic approach. Allow extra time — it's on Saadiyat Island.
The dome weighs 7,500 tonnes but appears to float — it actually rests on just four supports hidden within the galleries. Nouvel designed eight overlapping layers of perforated metal to create the "rain of light" — the pattern was computed from traditional mashrabiya screens.

Design & Structure
The dome's eight layers of geometric patterns were computationally optimized using ray-tracing algorithms to calculate exactly how sunlight would filter through at every time of day and season. The resulting "light rain" required over 7,850 unique star shapes cut from aluminum and steel.
Steel and aluminum dome structure, white Emirati marble, water (the sea itself is a building material — galleries open directly to water channels). The dome's 180m diameter makes it one of the largest in architecture.
The dome is a space-frame structure composed of 4 steel layers and 4 aluminum cladding layers. Despite spanning 180m, it appears impossibly thin and light — the structural depth is hidden within the eight decorative/functional layers.
