The world's most sustainable office — Foster's bronze fins breathe with the city
Office building in the City of London.
Featured in Foster + Partners's definitive monograph, Norman Foster: A Life in Architecture.
Visitor Guide
The ground-floor arcade (Vía) is publicly accessible and contains a free gallery. The bronze fins on the facade are a kinetic system — they open and close with the ventilation. The Roman Mithraeum in the basement is free and extraordinary.
From Cannon Street looking at the bronze fin facade — the rhythm of open/closed panels creates constantly changing patterns. The Mithraeum reconstruction is dramatically lit.
Public arcade and Mithraeum: free, open daily. Office floors not accessible. The Mithraeum requires a free timed ticket.
Achieved the highest BREEAM sustainability score ever recorded (98.5%). The building breathes through a natural ventilation system — the bronze "petals" on the facade are pressure-equalized panels that open to let air in. The ceiling system uses acoustic chilled beams that provide both cooling and sound absorption.

Design & Structure
Foster + Partners used computational environmental analysis to optimize every system: the bronze fin facade was parametrically controlled for solar gain and natural ventilation, the ceiling "petals" were arranged for acoustic performance, and the floor plan maximizes daylight autonomy.
Derbyshire sandstone base, bronze alloy cladding panels (the fins), Yorkstone paving. The bronze will patina over decades, creating a building that ages like the stone buildings around it.
