Visitor Guide

Visitor Tip

Book the tower access ticket — the spiral staircases and views from inside the stone forest are transcendent. Visit at 4-5pm when western light floods the nave through the warm-toned stained glass.

Best Photo Spot

Plaça de Gaudí across the reflecting pond for the Nativity façade. Inside, stand in the central nave and look up — the branching columns are the real masterpiece.

Access & Hours

Online tickets essential — sells out weeks ahead. Tower access extra. Guided tours available but the audio guide is excellent.

Insider Note

Gaudí used hanging chain models inverted to find natural compression curves. Every column angle was derived from nature — the geometry is pure structural logic, not decoration.

Time Needed

Computational Process

Gaudí pioneered analog computational methods: weighted string models (funicular polygons) inverted to find optimal compression arches. Modern completion uses digital parametric tools to interpret his plaster study models.

Materiality

Sandstone, basalt, porphyry, and reinforced concrete. The nave columns use different stone types at different heights — harder stone where loads are greater. Interior columns are reinforced concrete with stone cladding.

Structural Innovation

The branching tree-columns eliminate the need for flying buttresses by transferring loads along helicoid geometries. Each column splits at calculated angles to distribute forces directly to foundations.
