An 'invisible' sanctuary carved into the Danish dunes that transforms a dark bunker into a light-filled subterranean village.
Museum in Blåvand, Denmark.

Visitor Guide
Approach via the heath-lined pathways to the south; the museum is almost entirely hidden from the surface, creating a surreal transition as you descend into the earth.
The sunken central clearing at noon, where the four paths intersect to create a perfect cruciform shadow against the 20-foot glass facades.
Open daily 10:00–17:00. Adult tickets approx. 150 DKK. The site is a 2,800 m2 complex seamlessly embedded in the landscape.
BIG found a loophole in the construction ban for this nature preserve: one of the dunes was actually a man-made spoil heap from the bunker's construction, making it fair game for excavation.

Design & Structure
Designed through an 'archaeological maneuver,' slicing into the sandy soil to create a scenic procession. The walls of the gallery units rotate to provide sunlight to the central foyer as needed.
The building consists of concrete, steel, glass, and wood—materials native to the bunker site. The interior features hot-rolled steel and wood to maintain a raw, honest aesthetic.
The structural feat lies in the post-tensioned concrete roof decks that cantilever out 36 meters. The largest deck weighs 1,090 tons and is supported along only two edges.
