Design & Structure

FoldingDouble-CurvedBranching / Dendritic
Computational Process

The project involved adding a 20-foot-high floor to a safely-demolished transit building. The renovation used angled aluminum extrusions to ensure nonaligned windows remained watertight.

Materiality

Lead-coated copper, brick, and stone. Interiors feature Carrera marble bathrooms, hardwood flooring, and electric window shades.

Structural Innovation

The cornice and extra floor are supported by a specialized cantilevered system. MIT sued Gehry over failures in the design that resulted in leaks, common to his early work.
