Doswell Nexus Recovery Center
Situated on the long-standing campus of Nexus Recovery Center in East Dallas—formerly the Dallas Bible College—the Doswell Building marks the first phase in a long-term effort to transform the existing site into a modern, walkable recovery village. Nexus, a nonprofit serving women for over 35 years, offers a rare and essential service: allowing mothers to bring their children into treatment, building healing through connection, family, and community. The Doswell Building is envisioned as both a sanctuary and a symbol of transformation. Designed around the core values of Safety, Dignity, and Community, the architecture offers not just shelter, but a powerful sense of belonging. At its heart is a generous central courtyard—an open-air room that floods surrounding interior spaces with natural light and offers visual and physical connection to nature. This green space functions as a communal anchor, reinforcing wellness, togetherness, and a sense of peace. The connection to nature continues throughout the building. Carefully placed glazing opens views to the outdoors at every opportunity, while solar tubes bring daylight deep into corridors and interior spaces that would traditionally rely on artificial lighting. This abundant use of natural light is a deliberate therapeutic strategy—reducing stress, regulating circadian rhythms, and contributing to an uplifting environment that supports emotional healing. The building’s tilt-wall concrete façade features a refined, fluted pattern inspired by bamboo—symbolizing strength, flexibility, and growth. The pattern’s sharp lines and rich shadows add natural rhythm and elegance to the exterior, echoing the resilience and transformation of the women within. Inside, a warm, minimal material palette emphasizes comfort and clarity. Wood paneling and soft tones offer subtle transitions that align with the phases of recovery, from detox to long-term healing. The design is intentionally free of visual clutter, reducing overstimulation and allowing residents to focus on themselves and their path forward. As women complete their programs, each adds a polished stainless steel “token” to the façade—creating an evolving tapestry of personal milestones. Over time, the building will shimmer with hundreds of these markers, transforming into a powerful monument to collective strength, resilience, and hope. The Doswell Building is not just a place of recovery—it is a living part of the recovery process. By embedding light, landscape, and nature at every level, it redefines what a recovery facility can be: open, connected, dignified, and deeply human.
