Urjaa”, derived from Sanskrit, signifies 'energy' and 'power,' embodying vitality, dynamism, and the essence of life force.

The design process of URJAA was inherently iterative, where the material choice—Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC)—served as a catalyst for design evolution. The form of the building evolved through a dialogue with the material's unique properties, pushing the boundaries of conventional design to explore new aesthetic and functional possibilities. Here materiality drives form, showcasing how UHPC's versatility can inspire and realize innovative architectural expressions. Ethos 'Urjaa' represents not only the physical energy in innovative design and sustainable practices but also symbolizes the dynamic and transformative impact the project aims to have on the cityscape. It reflects commitment to creating spaces that is vibrant, harnessing the power of modern architecture to inspire and invigorate its inhabitants and visitors alike." INTENT FUNCTION/ PURPOSE This is an Experience-Design-retail centre, a multipurpose pavilion for exhibition. MATERIAL-DRIVEN DESIGN: The project's distinctive form highlights concrete's malleability and tactile qualities. The creative process embraced non-linear, brutalist shapes, resonating with concrete's historical association with brutalism yet pushing its boundaries through contemporary interpretation CLIENTS BRIEF The client, an accomplished concrete researcher & entrepreneur, sought to create a space that showcases concrete products and thus envisaged a structure in UHPC itself showcasing the material's versatility and aesthetic potential. This catalyzed the innovative architectural journey. With no predefined blueprint, the project evolved as a dynamic exploration of concrete's potential, both as a material and a medium for architectural manifestation. DESIGN INSPIRATION AND MATERIALITY: URJAA has a deep respect for brutalist architecture, characterized by its straightforward approach to material and structure. The project's form was initially inspired by pyramid geometries, symbolizing stability and permanence. As the design evolved, it became a study in how light interacts with concrete, creating a dialogue between the material and its environment. The chosen material palette is intentionally minimalistic, with concrete playing the pivotal role, celebrated for its textural and sculptural qualities. FORM AND FUNCTION: Upon entering, visitors are greeted by expansive steps that lead to a central space defined by 13-meter height and illuminated by four skylights. These design elements are strategically employed to modulate natural light, crafting an interplay of illumination and shadow that enlivens the interior. URJAA's ELEVATION is designed to convey a sense of ascension, reflecting a commitment to progress and future readiness. The structure's upward trajectory depicts innovation and a forward-looking perspective, aligning with the project's goal to inspire and adapt to changing times. CLIMATE RESPONSIVE DESIGN APPROACH: Acknowledging the harsh western Indian climate, the southern elevation and structural walls have been thoughtfully extended, providing a shield against intense sunlight and heat. This consideration ensures a comfortable interior climate while maintaining the building's energy efficiency.
