SCALLA: SPATIAL FLUIDITY AND LAYERED EXPERIENCE Scalla, a luxury Mediterranean restaurant, embodies permeability and spatial fluidity. Named after the Italian word scala (staircase), the design metaphorically reflects gradation, shifting perspectives, and spatial exploration. The spatial composition challenges conventional boundaries. Instead of a rigid façade aligned with the column grid, the design team introduced the Glass Curtain—a curvilinear framing system inspired by the Mediterranean coastline. This dynamic surface folds inward and extends outward, creating a breathable, flexible shell. At the heart of the space, the centrally positioned bar acts as a social anchor and a navigation point, ensuring seamless circulation. More than a functional element, it makes a bold architectural statement, embodying the restaurant’s identity through lighting, materiality, and form. Urbanjobs’ lead designer, Murat Dede, describes the experiential journey: “As users move through the space, they engage with key architectural elements—the bar, kitchen pass-through, and wine cabinet—creating a layered spatial experience. The intentional sequencing reinforces spatial continuity and memory.” In the outdoor pergola-covered area, curvilinear overhead structures enhance enclosure, lighting, and acoustics. Inside, curved separators behind sofas extend throughout, reinforcing spatial depth. These elements, crafted with custom aluminum supports clad in copper, wood, leather, and marble, integrate lighting and structural cohesion. The repetition of design motifs—from the Glass Curtain to furniture details—establishes a rhythmic visual language. Metal frameworks unify functional zones, from shelving to façade displays. The ceiling adapts to spatial needs, incorporating woven leather inserts and varied heights to balance openness and intimacy. Through layered materiality and deliberate sequencing, Scalla transforms movement into an immersive, memorable experience.
